How to Connect to the Studentserv

Studentserv :

Inside of school there is a server which we use to share documents, files, projects and more. It is also a place where you will have a personal folder, in which you can store projects, documents and files as an extra backup. We also use it so students can deliver their projects and files for assessment.

Requirements :

To be able to connect :

  • You have to be inside of school
  • You need to be on the SAE WiFi. (Guest Wifi will not work!)
How :

Apple OSX :

Simply press when in Finder  (APPLE+K ), which brings up the “Connect to server” dialog. Type in : smb://studentserv/
and then a login window will come up. Use your credentials that you setup here.   Your login should look like 5-AMS-50XXXX

Windows :

Open up Windows File Explorer. (WINDOWS+E).
In the address bar type \\studentserv\ and hit enter.
and then a login window will come up. Use your credentials that you setup here.   Your login should look like 5-AMS-50XXXX
On some systems it might be required to logon with a ‘\’ before your login. Like   :   \5-AMS-50XXXX

Folders :

There are a few different type of folders you can connect to. Lets try to explain.

First of : Each student will see a folder with his/hers studentnumber. This is their personal space. No-one can see it’s content except for the student himself. Staff cannot access it either. (Except IT)

Each course has it’s own folders.

AED for Audio Engineers
EMP for Electronic Music
WDD for Web Designers
FMD for Film Makers
etc…

Then each Course has 4 folders : (Let us use AED as example)

AED Delivery -> Here students can upload projects for assessment. Entire Protools/Premiere/Zipped websites can easily be placed here. Once files are dropped into the so called “Delivery” folders, only staff and the student who has dropped the file can access it.

AED Source -> This location contains information which is relevant to all classes (future/past en present) of that course. It is usually filled with example projects, exercise materials, manuals, guides and much more.

AED Classes -> Here we find information which is specific for a single class. Each class has a subfolder and in it you can find your class recordings, schedules, feedback etc.

AED Staff -> These are for staff to share files.

And last but not least there is the Xchange folder. This folder can be used by students to share files etc. with other students. Be aware that these folders can be cleaned out at any point so do not put anything in this folder for which you do not have a backup.
